Perhaps the single most important reason why these two devices have been in the news for a while now is the fact that with these two phones Microsoft has introduced its groundbreaking Windows 10 Mobile OS. Before we dive deep into Windows 10 Mobile and why Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are such milestone products let’s have a quick glance at the specs on these devices.

Microsoft has kept the specs on the two phones pretty much the same when it comes to the rest of the features. Both phones have a 32 GB storage option expandable via microSD. Both sport a stunning 20 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front facing camera. There is a slight difference in the battery capacity offered by the two devices. The Lumia 950 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery whereas its bigger cousin the 950 XL comes with a 3,340 mAh battery. Perhaps one major difference between the two devices is that the Lumia 950 XL will feature another major Microsoft breakthrough in keeping these high performance devices cool. This new technology is known simply as the liquid cooling technology.

Now let’s take a closer look at the one common feature that is getting these devices a lot more media attention than most other devices get based purely on an OS level technology integration – the advent of the Windows 10 Mobile OS.

How does the Windows 10 Mobile OS empower consumers through the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices?

The Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL are currently being bundled with the Microsoft Display Dock. This Display Dock will allow these two Lumia devices to be connected to a display, a mouse, a keyboard, or even an external source. Since these phones are powered by the Windows 10 Mobile OS they will come pre-loaded with universal apps that work seamlessly across desktop and mobile platforms.

In layman’s terms this Display Dock is your Pandora’s box which will allow you to use your Lumia 950, or your 950 XL, as a full fledged computer without compromising on either the productivity or the entertainment value that smartphones and desktop computers are supposed to offer. This is achieved through what Microsoft is calling the Windows Continuum. In other words Microsoft is focused on ensuring that the Windows 10 experience on a mobile device and on a desktop, or a Tablet, or a Laptop device becomes indistinguishable over time. Microsoft’s ultimate bet is making this experience a wide spread commonality.

What is Microsoft doing to sell its Windows 10 dream?

It appears that the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL may just prove to be the first mobile devices in what could eventually be a wide range of Microsoft products that will be powered by Windows 10. A good example is Microsoft latest Tablet, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. At the time of this writing the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is the fastest Tablet available in the world. It is 30% faster than the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Tablet and 50% faster than the MacBook Air and it is powered by Windows 10 Pro, which in turn allows you to use your phone as your PC through the Windows Continuum.

Microsoft has also announced that the Windows Continuum will not be restricted to its high-end flagship range of phones. The Windows Continuum will in future power phones which are a lot more affordable and within reach of the average consumer.
