It seems Micromax has put its foot on the accelerator. India’s mobile powerhouse is on a 4G-smartphone-production spree. The company is introducing several entry level smartphones with 4G capabilities.

Earlier this year in September the company announced three 4G powered smartphones – Micromax Canvas Blaze 4G, Micromax Canvas Fire 4G, and Micromax Canvas Play 4G. Now the company is introducing two new additions to the Canvas range of 4G smartphones. These two new additions are Canvas Xpress 4G and Canvas Pace 4G.

Canvas Xpress 4G

The Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G is an entry level offering from Micromax which is priced at Rs. 6,599. The phone has a 5 inch HD display. The Canvas Xpress 4G runs on a 1 GHz quad-core processor powered by 2GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory capabilities. The rear and front cameras on the Canvas Xpress 4G are 8 MP and 2 MP cameras respectively. The Canvas Xpress 4G comes with a 2,000 mAh battery and is a dual-SIM smartphone running Android Lollipop OS.

Canvas Pace 4G

The Micromax Canvas Pace 4G is the latest entry level offering from Micromax and is reportedly priced Rs. 6,821 on ebay India. While Micromax hasn’t officially announced a price for this smartphone yet, it is expected to be similarly priced.

Just like the Canvas Xpress 4G , the Canvas Pace 4G also sports a 5 inch display. However, the rest of the specifications for the Canvas Pace 4G are noticeably different from the Canvas Xpress 4G. The Canvas Pace 4G comes with a 1.1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor powered by 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal memory which is expandable to 32 GB through a microSD card slot.

The rear camera on the Canvas Pace 4G is a 5 MP camera with auto-focus while the front camera is a 2 MP unit. The Canvas Pace 4G will be running on Android 5.1 OS. For its price range the Canvas Pace 4G offers a rather impressive battery capacity of 2500 mAh. It seems that the Canvas Pace 4G is a product whose USP is its battery. Perhaps this is why the company has launched two different products within touching distance in terms of prices. The intent seems to be giving consumers options between a better battery life and better performance-oriented specs.

A brief look at Micromax’s 4G strategy

It is pretty clear to anyone observing that Micromax is unleashing a barrage of 4G powered smartphones in the Indian market in order to capitalize on the nascent 4G buzz that is slowly gripping Indian consumers. On the face of it this sounds like a brilliant strategy. Flood the market with entry level 4G phones just as 4G technology seems to be picking up some steam in the market. This is an intentional coincidence of technological acceptance and technological reach. The growing reach of 4G powered smartphones will further acceptance for 4G technology and vice versa.

While this may look like a progressive move, which may be the case as time progresses, there is an underlying possibility that this manufactured influx of entry level 4G smartphones may prove to be a premature attempt at winning the race. While 4G technology is expected to grow in India, if the growth pattern of its predecessor 3G is anything to go by, this may not happen as immediately as the next 6 months.

Considering the fact that Micromax is launching all of these impressive 4G phones right about now they are obviously betting on 4G taking off in a big way in about the same time frame. But the spread of technology in India is often dependent on government policy changes. Unless their internal research suggests that there is ample reason to believe the government is pushing for the spread of 4G in India, Micromax may want to reconsider its flood-the-market-with-4G-phones strategy.

Nonetheless, consumers in parts of India where 4G is already picking up will still be very keen on an entry level 4G phone.
