Reliance’s Lyf has made its intentions to cover a wide array of price points in the Indian smartphone market abundantly clear. The company has now launched two new smartphones in the budget-phone segment. The Lyf Water 4 and the Lyf Water 6 are here. Let’s take a closer look at these phones.

Specifications – Lyf Water 4

With a 5 inch IPS display and a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels (294 ppi), the Lyf Water 4 is your standard budget-phone. The display is protected from any accidental damages by the Asahi Dragontrail Glass. The Lyf Water 4 comes with a 1.2 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor alongside the Adreno 306 GPU.

The Snapdragon 410 has become a much preferred processor in the budget-phone segment of late and for good reasons. There really isn’t another processor optimum for this price segment when the hardware requirements and the pressure of performance are taken into consideration. The Water 4 comes with a 2 GB RAM.

The internal storage on the phone is a standard 16 GB. The primary camera is a 13 megapixel unit with LED flash, Full HD video recording support, and 6x digital zoom on both primary and secondary cameras. The secondary camera is a 5 megapixel unit. Some other camera features include touch-focus, auto-focus, and face detection. The dual-SIM phone comes with support for 4G connectivity. The phone also has support for VoLTE.

The battery capacity of the Water 4 is 2920 mAh with a talktime that will last up to 15 hours (4G) and standby time of up to 290 hours on a single full charge. The Water 4 is powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.

Lyf Water 6

The Lyf Water 6 is pretty much the same phone as the Water 4 except a few minor changes and one major change. The specifications on the Water 6 match those on the Water 4 in every aspect. Everything from the display to the processor, from the RAM to the cameras, from the OS to the battery capacity is exactly the same. The one major difference is the internal storage.

The internal storage on the Water 6 is 32 GB compared to the 16 GB on the Water 4. The Water 6 is essentially a 32 GB variant of the Water 4. Why Lyf wanted to name the Water 6 as if it’s an entirely different product is not clear but the two phones are identical in specs and differ only in internal storage capacity.

The only other noticeable difference between the two products is the color of the two handsets. The Lyf Water 4 comes in White color, while the Lyf Water 6 comes in White Gold. At first glance, the Water 6 does look a little jazzier than the Water 4.

The Water 4 is priced Rs. 7,599 while the Water 6 is priced Rs. 8,999. That is definitely interesting pricing. The rate at which Lyf is shipping phones is already part of smartphone market folklore but the pricing of the products seems to be an extremely well though out strategy.

Reliance slashed the prices of some of it phones recently generating much interest in the market.  The difference in prices of the Water 4 and Water 6 is indicative of a continuing strategy of pricing the phones in such a way that they fall in different price segments and don’t eat into each other’s business.
