OnePlus 3

After months of speculation and the so-called behind-the-scenes rumours the OnePlus 3 has finally arrived. The OnePlus brand’s journey has been quite interesting. The brand has seen mixed reviews to its first two products – the OnePlus One and the OnePlus 2. In fact the only thing that has remained consistent about the company’s first two flagship products is the hype surrounding the products before their actual launch.

I know the rumour mill has probably already filled you in on the specifications for this phone but now that the phone is finally here let’s go through the actual specifications.

Specifications – OnePlus 3

The OnePlus 3 comes with a 5.5 inch optic AMOLED display that has a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The pixel density of the display is 401 ppi. This is of course a 2.5D curved glass that is protected from any accidental damages by the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 technology. The phone is powered by a 2.15 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor alongside an Adreno 530 GPU. Apart from boasting of the best mobile processor currently around the OnePlus 3 also boasts of an incredible 6 GB RAM.

The internal storage on the phone is 64 GB, which surprised me a bit. I was actually expecting this phone to come with 128 GB internal storage and no 64 GB models. This is because OnePlus wants to push the OnePlus 3 as a top of the line smartphone, which it actually is minus the larger internal storage capacity that some of its competitors boast of.

The primary camera on the phone is a 16 mega pixels unit which supports LED flash, PDAF, Sony IMX298 sensor, 4K video, and optical image stabilization. The secondary camera is an 8 megapixel unit that supports Sony IMX179 sensor and 1080p video recording. That is definitely a high-end camera configuration. Kudos to OnePlus for pulling this off.

OnePlus 3The dual sim phone supports 4G connectivity, as expected, and weighs 158 grams. Battery capacity of the OnePlus 3 is 3000 mAh and it supports Dash Charge. Some of the sensors that the phone supports include the fingerprint sensor and the hall sensor. It seems that the battery capacity is one trade-off that OnePlus was willing to make. Surely, they know that the consumer expects more than 3000 mAh battery on a flagship phone in 2016.

The OnePlus 3 is powered by a retooled version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS which the company prefers to call “Oxygen OS”. This is a good thing and a bad thing. It is a good thing because it gives consumers a new user interface to work with but it is a bad thing because going by OnePlus’ previous record of providing updates to softwares the OnePlus 3 software updates might come as late as 2017.

So what has changed on the new OnePlus flagship?
Apart from some brilliant specification upgrades such as a 6 GB RAM and the most advanced mobile processor around, something else has also changed about the OnePlus flagship. Unlike the extraordinary, and often unsubstantiated, hype that the previous flagship phones from the company generated this phone can actually claim to be a real contender for the “top Android smartphone” title.

It seems that the company has come of age and finally wants to focus all its energies on building a high quality product rather than wasting marketing resources on claiming that they have built a high quality product. Whether or not the OnePlus 3 becomes a commercial success only time will tell but one thing is for sure that as far as owning a world class product is concerned OnePlus certainly has a winner on its hands.
