As far as software and internals of electronic devices are concerned, there have been so many advances that nothing really makes our jaws drop anymore. Moreover, vendors in the electronics space are easily able to keep pace with each other with respect to the said advances.

So, what are players in the laptop space doing to develop their unique selling proposition? They are focusing on improving the aspect that appeals to all consumers – design. People were awestruck when the first iPhone was unveiled about a decade ago. Apple, through the original iPhone, innovated the touchscreen interface that we know and love today. That is one of the major reasons why Time Magazine declared that the iPhone is the most influential gadget of all time.

Acer has launched a sleek new laptop – the Acer Swift 7 – which is arousing interest owing to its seemingly unprecedented design. The laptop is the thinnest ever and, therefore, incredibly light as well, weighing 1.1 kg (2.48 pounds). The device has a thickness of just 9.98 mm (0.39 inches). So, is this merely a marketing gimmick or is there more to this ultrabook. Let us take a closer look and find out.

Acer Swift 7 Specifications and Features

The Acer Swift 7 has a black exterior and a gold interior. The color combination works well to give the laptop a sophisticated look.

The ultrabook runs the Windows 10 operating system. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz Intel Core i5 processor. As for memory, it packs an 8 GB LPDDR3 RAM and a 256 GB SSD capacity.

The device has a 13.3-inch Full HD IPS display with ‘Acer Color Intelligence’. This technology optimizes color, saturation, and brightness in real time. The display also has Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

The Swift 7 has a wide precision touchpad, which apparently allows for better navigation or scrolling. The device has two USB 3.1 Type-C ports for power delivery and fast data transfers. One of these ports supports video output as well. Alongside these ports, there is a 3.5-mm audio jack.

The ultrabook has an HDR-enabled webcam. With respect to audio, it has Dolby Audio Premium and Acer TrueHarmony, which work in tandem to provide an immersive surround sound experience.

Acer claims that the 4-cell, 2,770 mAh battery in the Swift 7 offers up to nine hours of juice. People who like to work on-the-go will appreciate this for sure.

As for connectivity, the laptop reportedly offers 3X wireless speeds owing to the incorporation of 2×2 802.11ac with MU-MIMO technology.

With the Swift 7, the Taiwanese multinational electronics corporation has successfully produced an ultrabook with top-notch design features and stunning looks. Aside from design, the features in the ultrabook that stand out are the 4-cell battery and the wide touchpad.

However, it seems compromises were made in terms of performance. The 1.2 GHz Kaby Lake Core i5 processor is a tad disappointing as it can only handle so much of multi-tasking, let alone applications like hardcore sound or photo editing.

Previously, the HP Spectre had the bragging rights for being the thinnest ever ultrabook, beating Apple’s MacBook. Also, it seemed the HP Spectre had not compromised on the performance aspect, as it incorporated an Intel Core i7 processor clocked at 2.5 GHz. But that gave way to certain drawbacks such as overheating and low battery life.

There is more to aesthetics than just thickness. The obsession over making the thinnest laptop just to ease marketing operations will not fetch significant results in the long run. There are surely more ways to achieve product differentiation. Market players need to focus more on developing products that strike the right balance between design and performance.

That said, a cool design is certainly important to consumers. However, they would not really care about a couple millimeters provided they get a product that excels as a package.
