Here is a cursory glance at the specifications on the Vivo Y31A.

Specifications – Vivo Y31A

The Vivo Y31A comes with a 4.7 inch IPS display. The phone boasts of a 1.2 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor alongside a 1 GB RAM and an Adreno 306 GPU. The internal storage on the phone is a decent 16 GB which is expandable up to 128 GB via a microSD card. The Y31A comes with an 8 megapixel primary camera with LED flash and auto focus and a 2 megapixel secondary camera for all your selfies. The dual SIM phone supports most standard connectivity options including 4G and weighs a mere 147 grams, which is appropriate for its form factor.

The Vivo Y31A has a 2100 mAh battery capacity which is a decent fill for a budget phone. The phone is powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.

The expected price of the Vivo Y31A defies market logic

The Vivo Y31A is expected to be priced around Rs. 10,000. That would have been a perfectly fine price tag for a smartphone with those specs a couple of years ago but not in the current scenario. The specifications on the Vivo Y31A are at best 2014, if that makes sense. While the company is free to choose its pricing it is certainly not a wise move to ignore what its competitors are doing.

There are countless smartphones that are priced way less than the Vivo Y31A for almost the same specifications. In fact in some cases the specs are way better than those on the Y31A. Having said that this is not the first time a Vivo product is priced considerably higher than its competition. Higher pricing has been the company’s pricing strategy for a bit. A case in point was the Vivo Xshot which we had bench-marked for a performance review last year.

Some other offerings from the Vivo Y series

Vivo has a few other impressive smartphones in the Y series namely the Y51L, Vivo Y15s, and Vivo Y27L 8GB. Vivo has so far used its Y series as a budget phone series and it seems that is exactly how it wants to continue marketing it. That obviously does not mean that Vivo cannot introduce a mid-range phone in the series. Going by Vivo’s ever expanding portfolio and presence in the Indian market we are expecting Vivo to introduce some high-end devices this upcoming Indian summer.

How different, or similar, are the Vivo Y31 and Y31A?

There is very little difference between the two phones. The specifications on the two phones are almost identical except the Y31 has a better processor. This alone indicates that the price of the Y31A may not be as high as it is currently expected to be.

We will have to wait and see how the pricing story on this smartphone unfolds but as of now we can say that the Vivo Y31A is a decent budget phone and if you are looking for a new phone but don’t want to buy the usual suspects in the Indian market then Vivo Y31A could be a good alternate.
