Earth, Water, Wind, and Flame. These words would make a lot of people either think of environmental awareness campaigns or reminisce about how they used to watch Captain Planet during their childhood. However, these are in fact names of Reliance Jio’s Lyf series of smartphones.

According to IDC, Reliance Jio is the fifth-largest smartphone vendor in India. The company has been building a solid reputation in manufacturing phones with support for 4G and VoLTE. The latest addition to its portfolio of smartphones is the Lyf Water 8, which was launched in July. Now, let’s find out what this new phone has to offer.

The Lyf Water 8 will face some fierce competition mainly from phones by Chinese vendors like LeEco, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo. LeEco has now become the largest shareholder of Coolpad, which is another Chinese player in the Indian smartphone market. The former’s CEO Jia Yueting has taken over as the chairman of Coolpad. According to reports, the two brands will pool their resources and implement joint R&D strategies to develop a new range of phones in China (to start with).

The Lyf Water 8 has virtually identical features when compared with the Lyf Water 7, except the latter has a bigger 5.5-inch IPS display, offering a much higher pixel density of 401 ppi.  Also, the Lyf Water 7 incorporates 2 GB RAM, weighs 160 grams, and has a 3,000 mAh battery. It is priced at about Rs. 10,000 and is available only in silver and gold.

The Lyf Water 8, which is priced at about Rs. 11,000, is available in two colours – black and white. Other box contents include a SIM card removal pin, micro-USB cable, earphones, charger adaptor, and warranty card. As for the warranty, users can opt for the LYFCare Extended Warranty through the LYFCare mobile app, which is available for download on Google Play.

With so many vendors releasing new smartphone models every other month, the tussle to gain a higher market share in the Indian smartphone market is intensifying. And with the recent LeEco-Coolpad alliance, competition in the market will only increase further. With that said, it will be interesting to see how Indian players like Reliance Jio and Micromax hold up in that scenario.
