Acer is mostly known for its laptops, but in the recent years the company has stepped in the tablet market. And its latest entrant is Iconia A500 that boasts one of the largest screens on any tablet. In addition to the larger screen there are some other nifty features in the tablet. That makes it a great device to have for daily as well as entertainment use. But there are few areas in which the device struggles and is not able to withstand against other tablets in the market.

Design

Iconia A500 is simple yet elegant and combines the build features that make it very easy to use. Although, despite good design choices the device does weigh a lot, with been titled as one of the heaviest tablet available on the market. The device tends to be a bit beefy and does require a stand to use comfortably. The entire body of the device is constructed out of steel except for the two plastic slots at each end. Overall build vise the device combines some good features to make the device a viable tablet. The front of the device contains the 10.1 inch screen with the primary camera located on the left side. While in the back the device has a textured gray color. That is smooth to touch and feels good in the hand. The primary camera along with the flash are located on the right. With Acer logo in the middle and dual speakers on each side. The device also contains plastic flaps on each side that hide the HDMI, USB and Audio jack port on the left. While the right side contains the power and other slots.

Overall the device has a very basic design and does not bring anything new to the table. Making it a slightly above average design. But considering the size and weight of the device, it becomes a bit troublesome to use it efficiently.

Features and Specifications

Iconia A500 runs on a 1GHZ processor with 1GB of RAM. That does not make the device a power house, but does add a little power under its hood. As far daily tasks are concerned the device is easily able to handle them without any issues. But the main attraction of the device is its 10.1 inch screen. The display is multi-touch LCD with a backlit feature. That makes it easier to use outdoors as well as indoors. The device also supports a standard USB and HDMI port. That enables the users to enjoy 3G internet and high speed data transfer. The device also has features like WIFI and other connectivity options. That adds to the quality of the device. Acer Iconia A500 provides the users with 8 GB of internal storage. That is expandable through SD card.

OS and Tech

Perhaps the weakest area of the device due to being a bit old the device runs on android Honey comb. But is upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich. The devices suffers a lot due to older OS. The device yet able to render good experience and most of the android apps are backward compatible. But due to latest updates in the OS the newer apps do not run on the device. And features such as video calling and immersive experience are completely absent from the device.

Camera and Multimedia

With dual cameras the device has ample resources to deal with the photo creativity of the users. The front camera is 2MP while the rear-end camera is 5MP. The device has a decent camera app to deal with all the photographic needs of the users. But other than that, the camera does not feature anything extraordinary and due to older OS fails to provide the users with Panoramic and burst shot mode features. Making it a decent device for daily photography.

Battery

The device’s battery can last up to 10HRS. Considering the large screen of the device the device is able to last through the day on a single charge. Enabling the users to enjoy the features of the device without any issues or concerns.

Considering the competition in the form of iPad Air and Asus Fonepad the device does not offer much. But if you are interested in larger screen than this is the appropriate device for you at a reasonable price. The device would be easily able to handle all the tasks that are demanded out of it by the users.
