OLIVE VT 300-FALLS RATHER SHORT OF THE SET STANDARDS

Olive Telecom, an electronics brand established fairly recently in India, came forth with the Olive V-T300 calling tablet in the third quarter of 2014. It’s quite a skillfully designed tablet and comes in handy for both business and pleasure. However, the one grudge one can harbor against it is that it supports neither GPRS nor a built in dual SIM, a drawback rarely observed in calling tablets these days.

Features and Specifications

The Olive V-T300 runs on a dual-core 1.2 GHz CPU but has the slightly backward version of Android OS 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. The tablet comes in black or white choice of body color and runs both 2G (GSM) and 3G (UMTS) networking systems. The usual features like SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, and Email are all available, along with a T9 dictionary that makes typing easier. It supports Wi-Fi but not GPRS or EDGE. However, it is worthwhile to add that with a Bluetooth, HDMI port, GPS and both OTG and micro USB 2.0 cables, the connectivity is unmatched and the speed of internet is very high. Furthermore, Adobe Flash Player version 10.3 allows viewers to enjoy YouTube videos or games HD picture detail. The battery is rated at 3000 mAH and provides good backup in addition to a high standby life. The few built-in applications include Adobe Flash Player 10.3, Google Play Store, and Olive Academy.

Design and Quality

It’s built in a tablet form, with a glossy square edge and in two colors either black or white. The dimensions are 196x120x11mm and the sleek 7” TFT LCD multi touch, capacitive touch screen has a 1024x600pixel resolution and equipped with WVGA type display and also a G-sensor. The port which doubles up for both charging and USB functions can be found on the bottom rim. There are two cameras, of which the rear one is embedded in the flip cover on the back and the front one, supporting a lower resolution is present at the top of the tablet screen. There is a 3.5 jack on the top rim for connecting headphones.

OS and Tech

The processor is Dual Core run at 1.2GHz but due to the modest 512 MB of RAM, the CPU may fall a little short in performance while several applications are being run, causing heavy taxation on the system’s short term memory. For this reason, multitasking out of the question as the RAM may not hold up its end. Also, the OS is the obsolete Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, which may be a deterrent in the tablet’s marketability.

Camera and Multimedia

The hardware of the tablet incorporates two cameras which suit different purposes. The 2 MP rear camera provides fairly good picture quality and comes in a good resolution. The front camera is rated at VGA with low resolution and is mainly used to take selfies and for chatting on Skype. Both cameras are built to support digital zooming. Other entertainment features include the Image Viewer, Music Player, and Video player. The Adobe Flash player is of the first rate and can play both online and offline media and games. Documents or media can be shared amongst similar devices via Bluetooth or OTG and microUSB 2.0 cables.

 Battery and Memory

There is about 512 MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal memory that can be amped up to 32GB with the help of a microSD card if the user wishes to download more data. The 3000mAh Li-ion battery can be recharged via charging port and plough on through prolonged periods of use without dying too quickly.

Pros:

·         1.2 GHz Dual Core Processor

·         Voice calling tablet with 2G+3G

·         High speed internet and good connectivity

·         3000mAh battery having high lifetime

·         Pre-loaded apps include Olive Academy and Adobe Flash player 10.3

·         Great multimedia including voice and video recording, and video editing

Cons:

·         No GPRS/EDGE

·         Low resolution of front camera

Verdict

The Olive VT300 is packed to bursting with both calling and entertainment features and is undeniably useful in its own way. It employs Adobe Flash 10.3 that supports a host of games and multimedia applications, including Google Play and Olive Academy. However, it cuts a poor figure when compared with the likes of HP Slate 7 Voice Tab which has 1.3 GHz Quad-Core CPU and a cool 1 GB RAM. The design of the device is certainly up to the mark, whatever its other faults may be. Its screen resolution is also fairly decent. It would be best to wait and watch how far the tablet goes in the Android market.
