Xiaomi Mi 5

Xiaomi has started sending out press invites for its event on September 27. While there is no official word on this yet the rumour mill, fueled by hints dropped by Xiaomi itself,  suggests that this event might see one of the most popular tech startups in the world launch its next flagship product. This product is, at the moment being called, Xiaomi Mi 5s. Let’s take a look at what this potential successor to the Xiaomi Mi 5 has to offer.

Rumoured specifications – Xiaomi Mi 5s

The Xiaomi Mi 5s is expected to be boast of a 5.15 inch display with a screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. The display on this device is also likely to boast of the 3D Touch feature made popular by the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. If this feature is indeed the same as that on the iPhone 7 series it will be interesting to see how Apple reacts.

We know that Apple doesn’t mind engaging in lawsuits when its patents are infringed upon and Apple does own the patent for several 3D Touch features. It remains to be seen whether Xiaomi has actually infringed Apple’s patent or whether the 3D Touch on this phone is something on the lines of some other Android phones. There is also a possibility that it could be something entirely different in terms of implementation.

The Mi 5s will reportedly come with the latest 2.4 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor. As of this writing the Snapdragon 821 processor is the most powerful processor on an Android device. It will come accompanied by the Adreno 530 GPU giving it more processing power and indeed better graphics rendering capabilities. The Mi 5s will likely come with a 6 GB RAM, which would mean this is the best performing phone ever launched by Xiaomi.

The Mi 5s will also likely come with an internal storage of 256 GB, which will suffice the needs of most video and selfie hoarders. The primary camera on the phone could be a 16 megapixel unit, while the secondary camera could be a 4 megapixel unit. The phone will come with dual-tone LED flash support. Other impressive camera features include 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization, Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), and a 6P lens to boot.

Xiaomi Mi 5

The Mi 5s will almost certainly be a 4G phone with dual-SIM (LTE + LTE) support. More connectivity features on the phone should include VoLTE, A-GPS, and GLONASS among others. The phone is expected to sport the following dimensions – 144.5 x 69.2 x 7.25 mm. The Mi 5s should weigh about 147 grams which means that despite its form factor it will be well within the weight class that one has come to expect of 5-inch+ phones.

Reports suggest that the battery capacity on the Mi 5s will likely be 3490 mAh. While that is certainly a good battery capacity, I fail to understand why Xiaomi’s flagship product isn’t able to offer a way better battery capacity. We have seen this other flagship products from other brands as well. The HTC 10 for all its glory seems to ignore offering better battery capacity.

The recent Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco has shown that even the leading smartphone vendors in the world haven’t come to terms with cutting edge battery tech. Perhaps, the battery industry will have to solve this problems on its own before the smartphone industry takes a cue from it.

The battery on the Mi 5s does support Quick charge 3.0 and the phone will almost certainly have fingerprint sensors. Last but not the least, the Mi 5s will be powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS and of course the user interface will be the one defined by Xiaomi’s very own MIUI 8.

Smartphone enthusiasts around the world are looking forward to what Xiaomi has in store for them come September 27. We will keep you updated as and when new information emerges on the Xiaomi Mi 5s.
