The LG V20 – the highly anticipated flagship device by LG – will likely be available for pre-orders in the US on October 17. The sale of the phablet has begun at the electronics giant’s native country – South Korea. The sale will spread across other regions, including North America, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia, over the next couple of weeks. Now, let us move on to the good stuff – the specifications.

LG V20 – Specifications

Form Factor

The LG V20 has the dimensions – 159.7 x 78.1 x 7.6 mm – and weighs 173 grams. There is no gimmick related to a modular system in this offering. The phablet has a solid build – aluminium-alloy at the back and silicon polycarbonate at the top and bottom. According to LG, the device has military-grade durability and its shock absorption is 20% more effective when compared with last year’s iteration – the LG V10.

The LG V20 has volume rockers on the left. There is a button at the back, which doubles as a fingerprint scanner and a power button. The only issue with the device that is worth pointing out is that it is not water-resistant. As for colour options, the LG V20 is available in Titan, Silver, and Pink.

Display and Platform

The phablet has a 5.7-inch quad HD IPS Quantum display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels, translating to an incredible pixel density of 513 ppi. The display comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. It also features a 2.1-inch secondary display, which has a resolution of 160 x 1,040 pixels (513 ppi). The font on this display is more legible this time around, which is a welcome change.

With regard to the operating system, the LG V20 will be the first phablet to run Android 7 Nougat out-of-the-box. The system allows for quick multitasking. Some of the functionalities include quick access to apps, updated notification features for sending quick replies, etc.

Camera and Battery

The LG V20 rocks a dual camera for a primary unit, which comprises of 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel shooters. The phablet has a 5-megapixel secondary camera. The video recording features are – 2,160p and 1,080p at 30 fps; and 720p at 120 fps. According to reports, the V20’s camera unit is on par with that of the Galaxy Note 7. That’s saying a lot given that the latter is widely lauded for having the best smartphone camera ever.

  • The 16-megapixel camera has the features – OIS 2.0, F1.8 aperture, Laser Detection AF, PDAF, Contrast AF, 75-degree lens, and 4K video recording.
  • The 8-megapixel camera has an f/2.4 aperture and 135-degree lens.
  • The 5-megapixel secondary camera is equipped with an f/1.9 aperture and 120-degree wide-angle lens.

The LG V20 has the Steady Record 2.0 feature, which allows for crisp and smooth video recording by eliminating the effects of shaky hands.

The phablet has a 3,200 mAh removable battery, which comes with the Quick Charge 3.0 feature. LG has claimed that the battery life is 20% higher compared to last year’s iteration. This means that the LG V20, on a full charge, will have enough juice to last well over a day.

Architecture and Memory

The LG V20 packs a 1.6 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and an Adreno 530 GPU. The device is unsparing with respect to memory features; it has a 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 2 TB via a microSD card.

Network, Connectivity, and Sensors

The LG V20 is a single-SIM 4G LTE device. The connectivity features include GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, GPS, Bluetooth v4.2, DLNA, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5-mm audio jack. The sensors incorporated in the phablet include compass, proximity sensor, accelerometer, and gyroscope.

Media and Entertainment

The LG V20 boasts of Hi-Fi Quad DAC Audio, which allows for a much cleaner sound quality. The device also features an HD audio recorder with three intelligent microphones and Hi-Fi Recording to generate sound with a wide dynamic frequency range. This technology apparently helps in recording high-quality audio/video at live concerts as well.

The LG V20 will likely face tough competition from the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Or will it? The recalls of the Galaxy 7 units due to worrying battery issues have certainly marred Samsung’s reputation. Samsung seems to have done fairly well in resolving this crisis by providing buyers with quality-assured replacements; however, the cruel place that is the Internet ensures that more damage is done than really required.

With that said, the LG V20 seems to be a solid offering, and we shall keep you updated regarding its reception in various parts of the world.
