Reliance Jio’s Lyf smartphone brand has been on a roll in the last couple of months. After becoming the fifth largest smartphone brand by shipments in India and launching some pretty good phones in the process, Lyf has now pulled off an absolutely brilliant move. The prices of Lyf’s 4G phones have been slashed by 25%. This move could help cement Lyf’s place in the Indian market when its telecom business makes its presence known.

This new strategy from Lyf is a brilliant exercise in customer acquisition. The company has not only slashed the prices of these phones but has also placed the incentive of taking home a free Jio SIM with 3 months of unlimited 4G connectivity.

The phones that have seen the price cut are from Lyf’s Flame series. Here are the new prices for Lyf Flame smartphones:

All of these of course are 4G phones. Lyf has achieved ginormous success on the back of Reliance’s huge reach. It is no secret that Reliance is pushing for the adoption of 4G network in India through Jio and this has got some of the largest telecom companies in India on their toes. Pretty soon you can expect everyone to offer affordable 4G connectivity.

This is because if Reliance Jio is allowed to establish its presence as the preeminent 4G service provider in the country and leave everyone chasing it gasping for breath, things may take a turn for the worse in the long term. Competition is what keeps industries growing at a healthy pace.

If one large corporation happens to establish monopoly then the catch-up business becomes a bit tough to handle. And if you are of the opinion that a monopoly in the telecom sector is a distant dream right now, you should know that the company at the helm of this potential 4G revolution is no start-up. It is one of the biggest names in corporate India with giant resources at its disposal.

I joked with a friend of mine who is an analyst at IDC earlier this year that if Reliance wanted to own the largest smartphone brand and telecom provider in the world’s most happening market, it could do so in a jiffy. Well, it may not be a joke anymore. Lyf has already made its presence felt by shipping an extraordinary amount of phones in one quarter. Now by slashing the prices of its phones to make them super affordable the company has made its intentions clear. The free 4G offer is a cherry on the cake.

Only Reliance with its vast resources could have pulled all of this off. One cannot even imagine a startup trying to make its mark attempting such huge and calculated gambles. Thanks to the slashed prices Lyf phones now also have the opportunity to see a surge in revenue. I will not be surprised to see Lyf among the top 5 smartphone brands in India by sales as early as next year.
