A couple of months ago we told you that Apple is likely planning a cheaper iPhone that will be launched at an event in March. Rumor mills have sprung into action once again and it is becoming increasingly likely that a brand new low-cost iPhone is around the corner. Low-cost by iPhone standards of course.

The difference between the previous rumors and the new ones is the name of the product. Earlier it was being reported that the cheaper iPhone could be called iPhone 6C but now it is being reported that it could be named iPhone 5se. Well, when the Apple event finally takes place in March we may end up finding out that the cheaper iPhone probably has a very different nomenclature. However, the chances that a cheaper iPhone will launch are pretty rife at the moment.

What could be the potential specifications of the iPhone 5se?

For starters this will have to be a small screen iPhone. In all likelihood iPhone 5se will sport a 4 inch display. Apple’s flagship iPhones sport a much larger display now compared to a couple of years ago. The Cupertino based tech pioneer was forced to adopt a larger display thanks to growing user demands for a large screen. In a market dominated by cheaper yet competitive Android devices of all shapes and sizes Apple’s dilemma has been to come up with a cheaper variant of the best selling gadget of all time.

In order to ship a cheaper variant Apple has previously resorted to making cheaper hardware but that hasn’t gone down too well with its loyal fan base which has come to associate brand Apple with high quality hardware. Somehow the label “cheap” and the brand “Apple” don’t seem to work very well when put together.

This is probably why Apple might change things around this time. The company is expected to adopt a better design approach and put in its best chipset in what will be a much cheaper, if not the cheapest, iPhone compared to the current Apple flagships. The iPhone 5se will likely have an A9 chipset, which is Apple’s latest chipset and one of the best SoCs going around.

The iPhone 5se is also expected to have an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The iPhone 5se will reportedly come with 1 GB RAM which seems a bit on the lower side.

Apple needs the iPhone 5se to succeed

Apple currently has a 2 percent market share in India, which is peanuts compared to what the local brands have notched up. The likes of Lava, Intex, and Micromax have raced of Apple over the last few years and dominate the mobile landscape in India alongside international OEMs such as Samsung and Huawei.

The primary reason for this is the pricing. India’s consumer base is perhaps the most demanding in the world. Even by emerging market standards India expects and demands high quality products for prices that would be considered cheap in any other major smartphone market. Perhaps it is India’s ability to demand and then absorb that has led giant’s such as Samsung to adapt themselves according to the local market.

If Apple wants to throw some legit punches at India’s local players and international players that play by the local market’s rule Apple needs to join the party. To be fair Apple has tried previously but not with the level success that one associates with other Apple products. This is why Apple needs the iPhone 5se to succeed.

Apple now knows that shipping a cheaper iPhone does not automatically mean the consumer is willing to compromise on the quality of the hardware and other specs. Apple is wiser and we expect them to deliver more than we expect out of the iPhone 5se when it does hit the stores next month.
